The Importance Of The Arts

I was listening to a radio show the other day - it was a topical show with questions send in from the listeners - and they were discussing how funding is being reduced from the Arts and more focused on the Science and the technological as the worry of climate and change is rapidly increasing etc etc etc
Now firstly I know of the importance that things have got to change, that we need to change the way we think and find the right balance but here's the question: How is this change going to come about without The Arts?
Now the critically most important role of the Arts is to enable one to see the world and the human condition in a different way. How we see truth in a piece of Art is how we see truth in something that we might've not seen or realised before. Artists compel us to think, poets have an certain power of observation and can be a fine source for good and at the very least can jolt us out of complacency. Art makes us think, drama and theatre make us think, even listening to a song makes us think and I can hear you say well Science makes us think but here's the thing; in order to get a broader perspective of things we need the music, the plays etc because once our thinking buds are nourished we can access new ideas, look at things from a different perspective and with Science, one very often gets stuck in a way of thinking; once something has been said by someone we very easily take it as red rather than really thinking about it. The Arts makes us think about things, with a piece of art wok there is no right or wrong, there is no "in other words"

I recently listened to a song on the radio and the lyrics meant so much to me that it made me want to go out there and spread the message of the song which was basically that we should love who we are, celebrate individuality etc SO many people out there hate who they are and some can't live with themselves and suicide is very often forthcoming but THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO HAPPEN! Had they listened to that song, or something similar; seen a play about someone similar to them. I reckon their life might've been saved and do you really think that had a new piece of technology would've saved them?

The Arts save lives, and they nourish our thinking, feeling and breathing. Finding something, a feeling, a way of thinking that you thought was unique to you being written or displayed by another individual - dead or alive - THAT is one of the most beautiful things and life enhancing things.

So, it's in our hands; it's our future. One of the greatest things you can do is be exposed to as much Art as possible- be it a play at the theatre, a book, an article, a movie, a song, an art gallery or even a search on Google images. Keep it alive - in society and within YOU!

Thank you for reading,
